Gone are the days when a rickety aerial, precariously hanging off the guttering on the side of the house was good enough to beam the grainy pictures of the three available main stream channels to our TV. Today, we have a far wider choice of channels, 24 hours of TV beamed from all over the world. The analogue signal is disappearing and we now have a choice between Freeview, Freesat or satellite. Digital_TV_Aerials

It’s no surprise then, that as consumers we can be confused by the jargon, technical phrases and the huge amount of information out there on TV aerial installations when all we want to know is:

What is a TV aerial installation?
Do I need a new TV aerial?
What aerial do I need?
How much does a TV aerial installation cost?

  1. 1. What is a TV aerial installation?

This refers to the piece of equipment that receives the digital signal so that you receive a picture on your TV. Aerials can look like the traditional ones we are accustomed to seeing on houses or they can be the more modern looking satellite dishes. They can be placed on the side of your house, or on the chimney or in the loft. Your aerial (whether it’s the traditional style or a satellite dish) is an essential piece of equipment; if you want to receive Sky or Freesat for example, you’ll need a satellite dish. For Freeview you‘ll need a traditional style of aerial.

There are two types of signal that have been talked about recently; the, now defunct, analogue signal and digital signal. It is easy to become confused with these terms:

  • The analogue signal

Unless you’ve not read a newspaper, watched TV or been on the internet in the last few years, you’ll know that the analogue signal in the UK is being switched off in 2012.

  • The digital signal

By 2013, every region in the UK will receive a digital only signal. For most people, this won’t be a problem as most aerials that can pick up an analogue reception can also pick up digital aerial signals.

The only change you will have needed to have made is to purchase a ‘set top box’ for older TVs for them to be able to receive the digital signal. Today’s modern TVs usually have Freeview ‘built in’. Most people need not have changed their aerial as most are capable of receiving the digital signal.

But, in all honesty, when was the last time you inspected your TV aerial? Good TV aerial installations should last 20 to 30 years. TV aerials tend to be things that sit on the side of our house and we rarely give it a second thought until we can’t get a decent enough signal to watch our favourite programme.

When there’s a problem with your aerial, you may find you only need your aerial repairing rather than a new TV aerial installation. Our engineers will be able to give you advice on this; and the great news is that we will visit your property for free! Why pay a call out charge when you don’t need to?

I would like to have Sky or another satellite TV package. Do you install satellite dishes?

Yes we do! Another common myth is that satellite dishes as TV aerial installations are the domain of larger, more commercialized companies, such as Sky. You’ll be surprised at how competitive our prices here at Mays Aerials are for installing satellite dishes.

  1. 2. Do I need a new TV aerial?

This is always an excellent question to ask when you looking at TV aerial installation. You might need you aerial repairing or possibly a cable repair; don’t just assume you need a new aerial. When looking at a new TV aerial installation, you need to be a ‘savvy consumer’. Do your research!

One often mis-quoted term, and one which has led to many people on the south coast of England have needless new TV aerials installed, is digital aerials. There is no such thing in the UK! They are referred to as aerials for digital and are the new, modern type of aerial that receives the digital signal. To receive digital aerial signals, certain ‘parameters’ need to be in place. If these things are not in place, then the correct digital signal will not be reaching your digi-box (or other TV set top box) and so your picture won’t be brilliant.

If a TV aerial company attempts to blind you with science, then they are not the right people for the job! Our trained and professional engineers will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have, as well as checking your current TV aerial installation to see if it’s doing the right job. We won’t ‘upsell’ you an aerial that you don’t want or need. We will explain fully any work that needs doing and give you a comprehensive quotation for the work.

Who to trust when looking at a getting a new TV aerial installation

When you need to ask advice from a professional trade person, it can be difficult to know if they and their advice are trustworthy. Mays Aerials have been a member of checkatrade.com since December 2011 and we are immensely proud of the fact that we deliver just over 95% of our TV aerial installation jobs bang on the quote we gave. There are on occasions unforeseen hitches which means that just under 5% of customer were informed that there may be a little extra to pay. Even in these circumstances, our customers were more than satisfied with our work, especially as all our labour and parts are fully guaranteed for a year. We’re not interested in hard-sell techniques.

  1. 3. What aerial do I need?

There are several different ways – high gain aerials, log periodic aerials, multi beams, 5 ft masts or 6ft masts the list can go on but rather than take this complicated route how about doing this - go outside and have a look up and down your street, observing what kind of aerials your neighbours have. If you see that they have simple looking aerial installation on 6ft masts, and you’ve been recommended a more complex set up on a 20ft mast, you need to ask the question why. With Mays Aerials you’ll have all this explained to you by one of our engineers. Of course, there may be a reason why you need a different set up to the house next door.

  1. 4. How much do aerial TV installations cost?

Once again, this is where you need to be a ‘switched on’ consumer. Any company that promises they can do it for a few quid, will probably end up charging you more. Aerial TV installations can vary in price as aerials come in so many different shapes and sizes!

Here at Mays Aerials, we don’t charge a call out fee as we need to visit your property so we can have a better idea of the type of aerial you need. Different areas they will all have different reception characteristics. Areas of Bournemouth, for example can have excellent reception, whereas just down the road the road TV reception signal can be very poor.

We work across the south coast in the counties of Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex, completing work in the coastal towns Bournemouth, Southampton, Chichester, Worthing and Brighton. In land from the coast we have a good idea of signal blackspots from Crawley, Horsham through to Guildford, recommending the right TV aerial installation for your property. And when we say we have local engineers, we really mean we are local to you!

We all take our TV for granted and family life often revolves around the box in the corner of the living room. TVs are far more sophisticated so when you your aerial stops working properly, you need trusted and respected engineers to help you out. Contacting Mays Aerials brings you several benefits including free estimates and quotes, a 12 month guarantee on all our work same day installation service and free, impartial professional advice.
